A word from the President
Dear Afera Members,

This issue of Afera News brings us two interesting articles about our business, based on presentations made at Afera’s Annual Conference in Dubrovnik. First, we learn more about global adhesive tape market trends revealed in the most recent Freedonia study. Anurag Yadav of Scapa dampens any hopes we have of receiving extremely positive data out of Europe. The good news is, however, that the global tape market is growing.

Second, Amy Aerts of Nitto explains European chemicals regulation affecting tape manufacturers and raw materials suppliers. The trend tells us that legislation will become stricter and more far-reaching. Ms. Aerts suggests a number of steps that companies can take to integrate regulatory affairs successfully into their strategies going forward.

We have a very informative 7th Technical Seminar planned on 13-15 April at the Brussels Marriott Hotel. Participation is open to all adhesive tape industry professionals who are interested in learning about the latest technical issues linked to our business. Those who register before 15 February will receive €100 off their participation fee.

Lastly, I look forward to meeting with all of Afera’s management at the Technical, Marketing, and Steering Committee meetings in Amsterdam next week.

I wish you all a successful 2015,

Laurent Derolez
Afera President
Market trends and statistics based on the 2014 Freedonia global tape study
Overview:
  • The global adhesive tape market is estimated at 39.3 billion square metres in sales volume, with an average sales price of $1.03 per square metre
  • The market size in terms of sales value is approximately $40.5 billion
  • Asia/Pacific, and China in particular, is leading in both production and sales
  • Asia/Pacific increased its share of global adhesive tape production from 40% in 2003 to 55% in 2013
  • Asia/Pacific accounted for 49% of global tape sales in 2013
  • The difference of 6% between Asia/Pacific production and sales indicates that excess production volume is shipped out of Asia into different regions according to supply and demand
  • The global adhesive tape market is growing 5% year-on-year in sales volume and 6.5% YoY in market value
  • The average selling price will move from $1.03 to $1.11 per square metre between 2013 and 2018
  • The specialised tapes segment is leading the adhesive tape trend with 5.4% YoY growth
  • In terms of raw materials, the biggest component for the tape manufacturing business, the industry will move increasingly toward lightweight materials and down-gauging product specifications.

Afera’s Dubrovnik conference presentation series

Anurag Yadav of Scapa Group plc, UK lectured at Afera’s October 2014 Annual Conference in Dubrovnik on market trends and statistics presented in Freedonia’s May 2014 report ‘World Pressure Sensitive Tapes’. As Head of Global Product Portfolio Management at Scapa and a member of Afera’s Marketing Committee, Mr. Yadav prepared a focussed review of Freedonia’s 400-page study, which the Association purchased for the purpose of presenting to its membership. Read more
Current and future chemicals regulation affecting the tape business
Overview:

  • Chemicals legislation in Europe and worldwide is complex and expanding, led by REACH
  • (Planned) EU bans and restrictions on chemicals such as ADCA, DEHP, toluene, and formaldehyde pose tough market challenges to tape-related businesses
  • Bolstered by Scandinavia, REACH has had the largest impact on European tape businesses, which must keep up with discussions taking place about registered chemicals
  • EU legislation will probably soon be developed to cover polymers and ‘articles’
  • In order to succeed, adhesive-tape-related organisations will have to adapt efficiently to developing legal requirements by incorporating regulatory affairs into their business models
  • Both large companies and SMEs should create dedicated divisions or teams to manage regulatory affairs within their organisations; build a system of compositional data with customers; incorporate regulatory affairs into product development, sustainable development, product procurement, and, especially, sales; provide regulatory support for each global region in which companies are present; and use regulation as a driver for innovation.
