A word from the President
Dear Afera Members,

Today everyone speaks about Europe as a land of no growth, high government debt and social deficit. I have to say that after Afera’s Annual Conference, we can all agree that our industry shows very positive signs.

With the theme “The Future of the European Adhesive Tape Industry: Technology, Trends and Markets,” we chose to focus on looking and moving forward. Moreover, we had an impressive contribution from a European trendspotter and futurologist, Mr. Lindkvist, who discussed Darwinnovation in a turbulent world. Basically what he said is that if you detect the underlying trends in our societies, you can achieve unlimited growth—of course, only if you innovate in line with those trends. To name some: India will overtake China and the US in 2050, and the East will become more prosperous, forming smaller households and buying more stuff.

The adhesive tape industry needs to tap into societal trends, especially those of technology, resources and business. Not just microtrends—quick-moving fads, especially in technology generations. But macrotrends—long-term, slow-moving business cycles.

For 2015, let us hope that the Ukraine-Russia border tensions do not escalate and in fact are soon resolved, along with the current violence in the Middle East.

I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a fantastic New Year, and naturally, I hope 2015 is very successful for you and your companies.

Laurent Derolez

Afera 57th Annual Conference: Technology, trends & markets in the future of the European adhesive tape industry
Afera’s Annual Conference welcomed more than a hundred of Europe’s best and brightest in the adhesive tape industry who came together to listen, learn and network. Held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, at the Hotel Dubrovnik Palace from 1-4 October 2014, the event 1) saw a particularly high attendance of delegates from businesses along the adhesive tape industry value chain, including an end user, 2) marked a shift of themes to discussions of markets and challenges—and away from crisis management, 3) offered high-quality presentations, from end user needs to economic analyses and market data, and 4) re-established itself as the premier networking and informational event for adhesive tape producers, raw materials and machine suppliers, converters, national tape organisations and other international counterparts, and even end users. Captains of Industry discuss challenges in the European adhesive tape value chain

Once again Afera's best and brightest gathered for a panel debate centred on the Annual Conference theme "The future of the European adhesive tape industry: Technology, trends and markets"

Afera Annual Conference participants were treated to a lively panel debate during the Working Programme on Friday, 3 October 2014. This was Afera’s third ‘Captains of Industry’ discussion event, expertly moderated by independent marketing strategist Bert van Loon, who got some of the top managers in today’s European adhesive tape industry to open up about their personal and company views on topics such as customer intimacy, Asian competition, flexibility, consolidation, raw materials, and young talent. Read more

Afera General Assembly 2014 report

Afera’s General Assembly (GA) was the first item on the agenda of Day 3 (2 October) of the 57th Annual Conference in Dubrovnik.

With 60% of Afera’s Active Membership in attendance, this year’s 40-minute GA was called to order by Afera President Laurent Derolez (Chargeurs/Novacel S.A.), who welcomed those present. He then reviewed the agenda, anti-trust guidelines and the GA 2013 Minutes recorded in Sicily, all of which were confirmed and approved.

Next, the Committee Chairmen reviewed the current and future activities of the Marketing (MKC) and Technical (TC) Committees. In addition to an overview below, these are covered in this issue or future issues of bimonthly Afera News. Read more
