JULY 2014
A word from the President
Dear Afera Members,

This spring the global adhesive tape industry took another step forward with the holding of its fourth official Global Tape Forum and Global Test Methods Committee meetings during the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council’s Tape Summit 2014 in Nashville in May. GTF member countries/regions North America, China, Japan, Taiwan and Europe are working well together on a variety of issues. Most significantly, the Thickness test method is the first GTF TM set to be published shortly.

Marc de Vos, a very popular speaker at Afera events, most recently explained to us how bright the future is for growth in business. One of the areas which Mr. De Vos says is key in future growth is the ‘greening’ of the economy. In Bernhard Elias’ presentation, we find out how tapes are ideal in producing a more energy-efficient product – in his case, in the design of bonded glazed windows.

Afera’s near future is also bright and you will see why at our Annual Conference. During the first week in October, all of the tape industry’s great minds and important players will gather for a few days of information exchange and networking. Whether you would be a first-time or returning attendee, I encourage you to join us in Croatia for this event, which is themed “The Future of the European Adhesive Tape Industry: Technology, Trends and Markets.”

Laurent Derolez
Afera President
The future of growth: "All of us, rationally speaking, can be optimistic"
  • Those in business today have every reason to be optimistic about the potential for growth going forward
  • Despite the megacycle of growth coming to an end in the West, those in business will prosper because of market opportunities found in 3 billion people in the developing world moving from poverty to middle class
  • A Western consumer market of 500 million baby boomers with time and lots of money to spend, along with the transition to a ‘green’ economy, will provide additional sources for economic growth
  • Much more human capital, with education and ingenuity, will provide innovation potential than ever before
  • Markets poised for growth in the future include healthcare, big data, and smart materials.
5th article in Afera's Sicily conference presentation series
Marc de Vos' presentation “The Future of Growth” was one of the two highest-rated items at Afera’s Annual Conference 2013 in Sicily. Mr. De Vos is currently Director of the Itinera Institute, a Belgian think tank which formulates recommendations for structural policy reforms, with a focus on sustainable economic growth and social protection. A returning speaker by popular demand, he updated the audience of tape producers, suppliers and those in other related businesses on his interesting perspective on the extent and locations of growth in the future.

The bottom line: Everyone in business today has every reason to be optimistic about growth going forward. The megacycle of growth in the West may have come to an end, but business will not make a u-turn – it will simply make a turn toward developing countries, Western baby boomers, and the ‘greening’ of the economy.  Read more
Tapes used in bonded glazed windows
  • The market for bonded glazed windows is growing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland
  • Static, dynamic and thermic loads must be considered when designing and producing windows
  • There are a variety of technical reasons for the beneficial use of tape in making bonded glazed windows, including large size possibilities, necessary added stiffness, lack of need of adjustment, reliable service life, energy efficiency, noise reduction and resistance class (RC2)
  • Economical reasons for using tapes in windows include no steel in the product, lower manufacturing costs, more automatisation, and the possibility of more ‘special products’
  • As a certifying body, RAL-Gütegemeinschaft Kunststoff-Fensterprofilsysteme e.V. (GKFP) developed the standard RAL-GZ 716, part 2, which describes how bonded glazing must be designed and tested by the profile system manufacturer in order to be sold to the window manufacturer with a quality mark. The aim is to ensure the lasting fitness for use of the manufactured products
  • This standard has been adopted in Germany, Austria and Switzerland
  • GKFP-certified companies include systems manufacturers, i.e., manufacturers of plastic window profiles and systems, as well as manufacturers of seals, raw materials, film, bonding systems and machinery, and contract laminating companies.

6th article in Afera's Sicily conference presentation series
In his presentation “The Outlook for the Building/Construction Industry in Conjunction with Adhesive Solutions: Tapes and Windows,” Bernard Elias, who is responsible for Quality Assurance at RAL-Gütegemeinschaft Kunststoff-Fensterprofilsysteme e.V. (GKFP), educated Afera’s audience on the uses, benefits and requirements of tapes in the design and construction of bonded glazed windows.

The bottom line: In the growing market of bonded glazed windows in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and beyond, engineers and manufacturers, as well as consumers, are taking notice of the many technical and economical reasons for using bonded glazing technology, in which tape can be used to fix the glass into the sash. As a certifying body, GKFP awards a quality mark to member companies which adhere to the quality and test requirements of RAL-GZ 716, part 2, the standard the association has developed. Read more
Global Tape Forum & Global Test Methods Committee Meetings held in Nashville, Tennessee
The Global Tape Forum (GTF), the international body comprising regional and national organisations that addresses key issues of the adhesive tape industry, met on 2 May 2014 in Nashville, Tennessee (USA). Held biennially, the only purely global adhesive tape event was hosted by the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council during its annual Tape Summit at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Centre.

The GTF includes the Global Test Methods Committee (GTMC), the worldwide adhesive tape technical body, which met the day before at the same location. The Meetings were attended by 5 of the 6 current GTF/GTMC members:
  • Afera, The European Association for the Self-Adhesive Tape Industry, www.afera.com
  • CATIA, The China Adhesives and Tape Industry Association, www.cnaia.org
  • JATMA, The Japanese Adhesive Tapes Manufacturers Association, www.jatma.jp
  • PSTC, The Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (North America), www.pstc.org
  • TAAT, The Taiwan Regional Association of Adhesive Tape Manufacturers, www.taiwantape.com.
The GTF and GTMC Meetings together made progress in structuring the practises of the 5-year-old international adhesive tape forum. Most significantly, the Member Associations followed through on their pledge to work closely to develop and harmonise adhesive tape test methods (TM) under the GTF umbrella.

The first TM which is set for release with the GTF quality label is Thickness. This will be followed by Width & Length, which is under review, and Loop Tack, which is still under development. GTF Members also pledged to develop a refined process for identifying and harmonising new TMs.

PSTC is leading an initiative to develop Measurement Uncertainty using data collected for SAFT testing to develop a statistical model. This will also be used for other TMs to explain to customers the data measured by the originator.

GTF Members provide data annually on total adhesive tape production in their respective regions/countries. (The data is reported each November for the previous calendar year.) It was established that the Members, who account for the majority of global tape production, produced approximately 34 billion square metres of tape in 2012.

In addition to the sharing of data, GTF Members agreed that the incoming Secretariat General will produce a newsletter with other pertinent industry facts and information that can be used as a bridge between the regions/countries between biennial Meetings. Afera’s Astrid Lejeune, who will continue to serve as Webmaster, will explore the possible use of web banners as a means of revenue for the Association.

Former Afera Steering Committee Member Mike Ayres, who has led the GTF since its inception in 2009, opened and transitioned the fourth Meeting to the new Chairman, PSTC’s Kiran Malhotra, who will serve a two-year term. Ms. Lejeune, who has served as Secretariat General since 2009, handed the reigns over to PSTC, who will take up the position to support the current Chairman.

The following GTF and GTMC Meetings will take place in Beijing, China, 17-20 May 2016, hosted by CATIA at its Technical Conference, which is themed “Innovation and Co-operation for a Green Tape Industry”. Afera has agreed to host the GTF and GTMC Meetings in October 2018 at its Annual Conference.
